Technology Matters Less Than the Behavior It Unlocks


Before automobiles changed the world, they frightened horses.

That small detail is easy to forget now, but it captures something important about technological change. When a new technology first appears, people tend to focus on the machine itself: how fast it goes, how powerful it is, whether it is useful or dangerous. But history suggests that the machine is rarely the real story.

The real story is the behavior that the technology unlocks.

Cars did not simply replace horses. They changed where people lived, how far they traveled, how cities were designed, and how communities were organized. Electricity did not simply produce light; it stretched the human day far beyond sunset. The internet did not simply connect computers; it changed how people learn, communicate, and form communities.

Again and again, the same pattern appears: the technology arrives first, but the real revolution begins when human behavior changes.

And those behavioral shifts are often the hardest part to predict.


Automobiles and the Birth of Mobility

In the early 1900s, automobiles were strange, noisy machines that frightened horses and irritated pedestrians. At first they seemed like novelties for wealthy hobbyists.

But once cars became reliable and affordable, a new behavior emerged: personal mobility.

People could suddenly travel farther and faster than before. This led to behaviors that would have been almost impossible to predict when the first cars appeared:

  • commuting long distances to work
  • living in suburbs outside city centers
  • taking road trips for leisure
  • mobile delivery services
  • drive-in restaurants and theaters

The automobile did not merely replace the horse. It created an entire culture organized around movement.

Cities widened roads. Highways appeared. Suburbs expanded.

What began as a machine eventually produced a new way of living.


Electricity and the Extension of the Day

Electric lighting is another example where the technology itself was only the beginning.

Before widespread electrification, most human activity followed the rhythm of daylight. Artificial light existed, but gas lamps and candles were dim, expensive, and inconvenient.

Electricity changed that. Suddenly the day did not have to end at sunset.

New behaviors followed:

  • evening shopping
  • nighttime entertainment
  • extended work hours
  • illuminated cities
  • 24-hour industries

Entire economies grew around the simple fact that humans could now remain active long after dark.

The electric light bulb may have been the invention, but the real transformation was a society no longer limited by daylight.


The Internet and the Collapse of Distance

When the internet began spreading in the 1990s, many people initially saw it as little more than a fast messaging system or a new way to share documents.

But once millions of people were connected, entirely new behaviors emerged.

People began:

  • publishing their own content
  • forming online communities
  • collaborating across continents
  • learning from strangers
  • building businesses without physical stores

A teenager could upload a video and reach millions of viewers. A programmer could collaborate with someone on another continent. A small online shop could compete with established retailers.

The internet did not just move information faster. It collapsed distance as a barrier to collaboration and communication.

The technology created the network, but human behavior transformed it into culture.


Small Technologies, Big Behavioral Shifts

Sometimes the behavioral shift appears in everyday life.

A simple debit card can quietly change a person’s relationship with money.

Handling cash forces a moment of friction: counting bills, making deposits, visiting the bank. Digital transactions remove that friction.

The behavior changes almost immediately.

Spending becomes easier. Withdrawals can outpace deposits. Financial awareness shifts from a physical act to a digital abstraction.

The technology may seem minor, but the behavioral impact can be surprisingly large.

History is full of examples like this: small tools quietly reshaping daily habits.


The Pattern Behind Technological Revolutions

Looking across these examples reveals a consistent sequence.

  1. A new technology appears.
  2. Early adopters experiment with it.
  3. New behaviors begin to emerge.
  4. Those behaviors spread through society.
  5. Infrastructure reorganizes around them.

By the time society recognizes the transformation, the behavioral shift is already underway.

The most important developments are rarely predicted because they depend on emergent behavior—millions of people discovering new ways to use a tool.

The automobile did not predict suburbia.
The internet did not predict social media.
Smartphones did not predict ride-sharing or short-form video.

The behaviors appear first. The industries follow.


Artificial Intelligence and the Next Behavioral Shift

Artificial intelligence may follow the same historical pattern.

Right now most conversations about AI focus on the technology itself: model sizes, accuracy, automation, and performance.

But if history is any guide, the more important question is different:

What new behaviors will AI unlock?

Some early hints are already visible.

People are beginning to:

  • collaborate with AI as a thinking partner
  • generate ideas faster than before
  • automate routine mental tasks
  • create content individually that once required teams
  • learn new skills through AI-assisted tutoring

These behaviors are still emerging. Many are experimental and poorly understood.

But as more people use AI tools, some of these patterns may solidify into everyday habits.

If that happens, society may gradually reorganize around those behaviors in the same way it reorganized around mobility, electricity, and digital communication.


The Real Opportunity in Technological Change

If history is any guide, the most important effects of artificial intelligence will not come from the technology itself.

They will come from the new behaviors that emerge once millions of people begin interacting with it every day.

Some of those behaviors may seem small at first. A person brainstorming with an AI instead of working alone. A student learning through conversation instead of textbooks. A single creator producing work that once required an entire team.

Individually these changes may feel modest. But history suggests that when new behaviors spread widely enough, they quietly reshape entire systems.

The automobile unlocked mobility.
Electricity unlocked the night.
The internet unlocked global communication.

Artificial intelligence may unlock something different still.

The future will likely belong not to those who predict the technology perfectly, but to those who notice what people begin doing differently once the technology arrives.

Because in the end, the machine is rarely the revolution.

Human behavior is.

Wildcard Assembling a Small Team


Over the past year I’ve realized something about how I work best.

I’m not the long-range mastermind planner.

I’m the wildcard.

The person who notices strange patterns, asks odd questions, and occasionally suggests moves nobody saw coming.

Most great teams seem to have one of these people.

But they also have something else: balance.

So I’m putting out a quiet call for a small experiment.

I’d like to assemble a team of four people — something closer to an RPG party or the old A-Team model than a traditional mastermind group.

Not a business.
Not a startup pitch deck.
Not a networking circle.

Just a small, capable unit of intrinsically motivated people who enjoy building interesting things.

I’m already claiming the Wildcard role.

That means I’m looking for three complementary archetypes:

1. The Architect
The strategic mind.
You enjoy structuring ideas, seeing long-range possibilities, and helping turn loose concepts into coherent plans.

2. The Builder
The implementer.
You like actually making things work — software, systems, prototypes, or operational structures.

3. The Connector
The relationship builder.
You understand people, partnerships, communication, and how to bring energy and opportunities into a project.

What would we actually do?

Help each other move projects forward when we’re stuck. And likely much more.

Four distinct roles.
Four different perspectives.
One small group capable of surprising things.

There’s no salary attached.

This is about curiosity, collaboration, and intrinsic motivation.
