A reflection on technology, human limits,
and knowing where to stop pushing.
For decades, virtual reality has existed in cycles of promise, excitement, and retreat. Each wave has carried with it the same underlying hope: that immersive digital worlds might one day become a central part of everyday life. The most recent wave—fueled by technological breakthroughs, massive investment, and the unusual conditions of a global pandemic—appeared, for a time, to bring that vision within reach. Headsets became wireless, affordable, and widely available. For the first time, virtual reality entered ordinary homes at meaningful scale.
And yet, despite these favorable conditions, virtual reality did not establish itself as a lasting mainstream technology. What we are now witnessing is not a sudden collapse, nor a failure of execution, but something more revealing: a return. The recent surge in virtual reality has clarified its natural limits, allowing us to release the expectation of universal adoption and redirect our attention toward the contexts where it works best.
To understand this moment, it helps to step back and observe the rhythm of virtual reality over time. In the 1990s, VR appeared in arcades and small boutique setups—often in malls or entertainment centers—where players could briefly step into immersive environments. These experiences were novel, exciting, and social, but they were also short-lived. The technology was expensive, the experiences brief, and the business model difficult to sustain. After this early burst of visibility, virtual reality largely disappeared from the mainstream and retreated into specialized domains such as military training, medical applications, and research environments.
It remained there, largely out of public view, until the modern renaissance began in the 2010s. With the arrival of consumer-ready systems like the Oculus Quest, virtual reality took a significant step forward. The removal of wires and the simplification of setup dramatically lowered the barrier to entry. For the first time, VR felt accessible, even practical. When the COVID-19 pandemic forced people indoors and shifted spending toward home-based experiences, adoption surged. Headsets found their way into households that, under normal circumstances, might never have considered them.
This period functioned, in effect, as a large-scale experiment. Virtual reality was not merely demonstrated—it was lived with. It was tested across different demographics, environments, and use cases. People who were not traditionally gamers tried it. Families shared it. Individuals returned to it repeatedly—or did not. And in that widespread, sustained exposure, something important happened: the technology revealed its boundaries.
For many users, the experience followed a familiar pattern. Initial excitement gave way, over time, to more intermittent use. Sessions that felt captivating in short bursts proved difficult to sustain as a regular habit. The reasons for this are not rooted in a lack of technological progress, but in the nature of the experience itself. Virtual reality demands a level of physical and cognitive engagement that differs fundamentally from other forms of entertainment. It asks the user to prepare a space, to isolate themselves visually from their surroundings, and to remain aware—at least partially—of the physical world for reasons of safety.
This creates a subtle but persistent tension. The goal of immersive media is to allow the user to lose themselves in the experience. Yet in virtual reality, a portion of the mind must remain anchored to reality: aware of furniture, walls, and personal safety. The result is a divided attention that can diminish the very immersion the technology seeks to create. Even in ideal conditions—a large, open room, carefully set boundaries—this tension does not fully disappear. It is not simply a problem of hardware or software, but of alignment between the experience and the human body moving through real space.
Seen in this light, the recent shift in virtual reality begins to make sense. The scaling of VR did not confirm its path to universal adoption; it clarified where that path becomes difficult to sustain. This clarity, however, is not a loss. It is a form of pruning.
When a technology is assumed to be destined for mass adoption, it carries with it a hidden burden: the need to appeal to everyone. Designers and developers must consider how it fits into every household, every lifestyle, every age group. They must imagine it as a universal solution. But when that assumption is released—when we recognize that a technology may not be suited for universal use—the mental load changes. Attention can shift from trying to make something work for everyone to making it work exceptionally well for the contexts where it truly fits.
In this sense, what appears to be a retreat is better understood as a redirection. Virtual reality is not disappearing. It is returning to a role it has always fulfilled effectively: specialized, high-value experiences in environments where its strengths can be fully realized. In fields such as training, simulation, therapy, and medical practice, VR continues to demonstrate clear utility. Even recent reports of advanced headsets being used in surgical settings suggest that its future may be less about replacing everyday reality and more about enhancing specific, demanding tasks.
For those who hoped virtual reality would transform gaming into something universally immersive, this realization may carry a note of disappointment. The vision of fully inhabitable digital worlds—so vividly imagined in popular culture—remains compelling. But it may also be, at least for now, misaligned with the practical realities of how people live, move, and engage with technology. Not every powerful idea is meant to scale indefinitely. Some are meant to find their place more selectively.
The end of virtual reality, then, is not an ending in the conventional sense. It is the end of a particular expectation—the expectation that VR must become a universal, everyday platform. What remains is something quieter, but in many ways more promising: a technology better understood, more appropriately applied, and freed from the pressure of trying to be everything to everyone.
In that freedom, virtual reality may yet do its most meaningful work.
